The Sandy Kittens have names!

I've known their names for a little while, but have held them close in a superstitious manner. They were so little, and still are, so they are very fragile and at this young age, many don't make it. So I held on to their names, in a silly way, to protect them.

They were found as Hurricane Sandy rolled in to New York City. It was a wonderful thing that someone ran into their back yard to get them and keep them safe. Hurricane Sandy caused a colossal amount of damage and left a tremendous amount of suffering and destruction in her wake. Many people and animals lost their lives, many more lost their homes, are struggling with health and have a long road to recovery ahead to re-build and recover. So I have chosen the names of Hindu Gods Ganesha and Lakshmi.

Ganesha is, among other things, known as a remover of obstacles.

Lakshmi is known to bestow wealth and prosperity, and has many other wonderful and significant characteristics.
The people and animals suffering through this disaster are constantly in our thoughts, and we'll remember them and support them as they overcome their hardships.

Ganesha and Lakshmi are a positive image of the beauty that is compassion. The woman that heard them screaming in the back yard did not go on about her business, she made it her business to do the right thing. Our fellow New Yorkers, and non-New Yorkers pitching in to help and donate as much as they can as often as they can to help people and animals affected by Sandy through this catastrophe are shining example of how people truly care for others in a purely selfless way. These actions make me smile and get me all choked up about how beautiful people can be. I love seeing how many people come running to help complete strangers in times of need.

Ganesha and Lakshmi have been named as a symbol of hope that people and animals affected by Sandy will overcome their obstacles and find prosperity. And when it seems like they can't make it, an encouragement to keep their faith and hold on, to know they are not alone and we all love and care for them and will keep working to make things better.
Welcome to the world little Ganesha and Lakshmi!

Sandy Kittens are 3 weeks old!

These guy are getting big! 

Take it from this guy, they are eating like champs!

 And getting plenty of exercise!

 But most of all, they are getting plenty of love:)

Their names will be announced soon...

Kittens from Sandy

OK Ted-E-Bear, you're up! A lovely woman, Rachel, from Brooklyn emailed me Monday around 11pm. She said she had found 3 kittens in the yard earlier that day, the mother is not around and she had monitored them hoping mom would return. The kittens were wet and cold and the storm was picking up, so she took them in. She is headed out of town and needs someone to care for them while she is away. When she returns she will find them homes and I told her I'd help her get mom and the kittens spayed/neutered. This morning, they saw mom and quickly headed out with the strongest kitten. Mom grabbed the kitten and took off. She did not come back for the other two.
Rachel and her boyfriend are headed out of town, so they brought the 2 remaining kittens to me. They are about a week and a half old. Eyes closed and both weighing in at a little over 5 oz. She says the black and white one is not doing as well as the gray and white, so I gave fluids. They both ate really well and so far seem feisty and well. Kittens this young really struggle to make it without their moms, I'll do my best. Huge thanks to Rachel for doing such a great job this week.

Upon arrival, Papa Eko checked them in.

"Hey Little Guys! Welcome to Big City Little Kitty Foster Home!"

"They look OK mom, but I'm going in for a closer look."

"Yep, they smell pretty good too!"

Here they are! They both ate very well and went potty just fine. I got some feeding video, but blogger can't seem to process it, so if it works on Flickr I'll add the link.

Nice warm nest with a soft bed and plenty of formula in their bellies:)

A cuddly teddy bear to curl up with for sleepy time, a foster mama to feed and snuggle them and Papa Eko to keep them safe.

And, of course, they have each other.

Harrison (aka Tapiwa) is adopted!!!

Harrison, formerly Tapiwa, has been adopted! Woohoo! He has a wonderful new mom and a feline big sis!

Harrison was found in early June during a TNR project in Sunnyside, Queens. Yep, that's all 10 oz of him sucking down a supplemental bottle feeding because he was sooo little!

Soon after, he was gaining weight steadily and nursing from his mama like pro! 

His mama took good care of her babies, loved them, cuddled and groomed them and most of all protected them! 

Finally, as the last hold out of the litter, he started eating on his own like a big boy! Once the kittens were big and healthy, their mama was released back to her colony and the kittens had a human foster mama. I hear from their mama's caregiver that she is doing very well and shows up for dinner every night:)

This little guy was PURE SUGAR! I called him "Space Invader" because he had absolutely no regard for personal space, he just had to be close at all times! His new mama says he is a " happy little dude that loves to snuggle and play" and that the very first night he climbed in to bed with her cuddling and purring! He's even starting to win over his new feline big sister! How could she resist?! 

 She also told us his new name is Harrison, as in Harrison Ford of Raiders of the Lost Ark!

She says "You can almost hear the theme music as he tears through the apart- ment"..yah, we can totally see that!

Congratulations to Harrison and his new family!!! 

Thank you, little guy, for sharing so much love while you were here, you really are a "gift of nature". Thank you to Harrison's new mama for providing him a wonderful home and a bright and happy future. What a lucky lady:)

They're ready!

The Shona Kittens are ready for their forever homes!

They are 3 months old, negative for FIV/FELV, spayed/neutered, de-wormed, vaccinated, playful and super-loving and snuggly!

Tapiwa! 

His name means "We have been given one of nature's gifts". This little guy is such a little lover boy. He just loves every second of his time with his foster mom. He loves to snuggle and he LOVES hair! He's a playful boy and enjoys playing with his litter mates as well.

Rufaro!

His name means "Joy...echoes the mood at birth...indicates he was much awaited" and that's the truth! He is super sweet and playful and LOVES a good belly rub! He gives his belly and actually lifts his little back leg to give the full belly!

Chipo!

Her name means "Gift" and her longer name, Chipochendenga, means "a gift from [God] Heaven because never has anyone seen such a cute baby" This sweet baby girl is just adorable! She loves being petted and just melts into your hand when you reach to pet her face or head. She is sugar-sweet!
